How to Create a Beautiful, Blooming Marigold Planter Box for your Patio

It is easy to create a planter box full of blooming Marigolds for your patio. All you need is a half an hour, a sunny spot for your planter and about twenty dollars worth of materials (listed below). Marigolds are naturally pest resistant, hardy and easy to care for. Regular watering and occasional fertilizing will have your planter looking lovely all summer long. 

Why Marigolds?

 Marigolds are bright, colourful flowering plants that come in different shades of yellow, orange and red. They are attractive, inexpensive and low maintenance. Marigolds bloom continuously thorough out the summer months until the first appearance of frost. Planters full of Marigolds will enhance any patio adding enormous beauty to your living area 

Required Materials and Supplies:

  • a planter box 60cm long by 20 cm wide
  • a bag of commercial potting soil mix for annuals (about 5kg)
  • a garden spade
  • about 6 cups of pea gravel (for drainage) 
  • 3 Marigold plants in 3"-4" pots
  • watering can filled with water
  • plant food for annuals such as "Miracle Grow" approximately 1 tablespoon added to watering can (see product directions for ratio)
  • wheelbarrow
  • garden hose
  • knife or scissors
  • Optional: gardening gloves
